3d Objects

3d scanning - definition

3d scanning is to capture a 3d object so that a viewer can see all sides of that object, walk around it, or turn it around (rotate the object so you can see the other side of it).

Poly.cam software

https://poly.com provides an app on your cellphone that can create a 3d virtual object.   It can accept input in the form of a series of pictures taken around that object (minimum 20, max 2000), or constructed from a video (up to 16 minutes long) from different angles viewing the object.

Example:   Take a video of a statue on Corfu:  https://youtu.be/7hF7afx3LOI  (see right) and import it into poly.cam -- let the software build the 3d object model, and download the .OBJ file.  This can be imported directly into Hoverlay as a 3d object, and can be seen here:  https://hoverlay.io/space/rke .   Note that the free version has a maximum file size of 20 MBytes, which is already rather large for loading (keep the files small).

Realityscan software

Another app to scan objects in 3d to create digital models.
